Spin Bike Advise

Postby Allen M on Wed Feb 27, 2008 5:03 pm

I'm looking for advice concerning the purchase of a used spin bike.
My husband and I are relatively new to the triathlon scene, but we're both trying to train for the spudman and would like to purchase a used spin bike to make training a bit more convenient. We've been looking on craig's list and have seen some in the $300-$400 range. So, I'm looking for advice on what to look for. What are good brands, what kind of maintenance do they require and what's a pretty good price. We're not looking for top of the line, but we want something of good quality that will last us a while. I'd appreciate it if anyone knowledgeable on the subject could clue me in. Thanks
Jamie

My wife and I got stationary trainers instead that we can put our bikes
on and ride indoors. That way you're using your actual bike and staying
used to it while training. Of course, if you don't have a bike that
doesn't help. But they are much cheaper than what you are talking about
(unless you go crazy and get Computrainer, those are cool!) Hope that
helps, I'm sure others in the club have ideas as well.

I agree w/ Allen. I picked up a trainer as well. I like being able to spend my training hours in the winter on the actual bike I'll be riding. I found a good sale on a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine trainer. I think I paid in the low $200s at REI and it received a ton of good reviews online. It is my first one so I can't speak with much authority but it seems to work great. Just hope on and ride.
